St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fredericksburg, Texas

historic place

St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, Texas, is a historic place located in Gillespie County. Rapid membership growth during the late 19th century prompted St. Mary's Church to complete plans for a new sanctuary in 1901. Prominent San Antonio architect Leo M. Dielmann designed this Gothic-inspired native stone structure. Contractor Jacob Wagner built the church in 1906. The church was consecrated on November 24, 1908. It features an asymmetrical front facade with a dominant corner tower and spire. This spire contains three bells transferred from the nearby 1863 sanctuary. Commemorative stained glass windows were installed in 1906 and between 1914 and 1917. Altar windows portray Wagner's daughter and the son of an early parishioner. St. Mary's Catholic Church was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1995. It stands as a notable example of early 20th-century religious architecture in the region.
