Almeda Road Bridge over Brays Bayou
historic place
The Almeda Road Bridge over Brays Bayou, situated in Houston, Harris County, Texas, was a significant structure in the city's development. Constructed in 1931, the bridge was designed by city bridge engineer J. G. McKenzie and built by Don Hall Constructors. It was part of Houston's early 1930s street improvement plan. The bridge featured a continuous span concrete girder structure, incorporating a simple concrete design and an urn-style balustrade. This aesthetic reflected the streamlined version of the City Beautiful movement, making it one of the last bridges of its type from that period. Recognizing its historical and engineering importance, the Almeda Road Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 2007. The original bridge was later demolished and replaced with a new structure, which opened in December 2021. The Almeda Road Bridge over Brays Bayou is historically important for its distinctive design and its former status on the National Register.
