Coombs, Charles E., House

historic place

The Charles E. Coombs House is a historic place in Houston, Harris County, Texas. This one-story frame dwelling, located at 1037 Columbia, was constructed in 1909. Architect Charles H. Tefft designed the residence. It is a Queen Anne influenced cottage, a style characteristic of the Houston Heights neighborhood around the turn of the century. The house features a modified L-plan and a double hipped-roof. A four-bay porch extends from an ell and wraps around the south elevation, supported by slender Tuscan-style columns. Notable detailing includes a prominent canted bay on the east elevation, accented by jigsawn brackets. Charles E. Coombs, a tank wagon driver for Waters Pierce Oil Company, commissioned its construction. The Coombs family occupied the house for almost seventy years. This property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 17, 1990. It is historically significant for its architecture and its long-term family occupancy within the Houston Heights.
