Elkins House
historic place
The James A. and Margaret Wiess Elkins Jr. House, a historic place in Houston's River Oaks neighborhood, was built between 1947 and 1948. This two-story brick residence was designed by architects John F. Staub and John Thomas Rather, Jr.. John Staub is known for his designs of single-family homes, especially within River Oaks. The house was constructed for James A. Elkins Jr., president of First City National Bank, and Margaret Wiess Elkins, whose father was a founder of Humble Oil. Both were involved in Houston's business, civic, and cultural life. The Elkins House is significant for its architecture, its architects, and its original occupants. On July 22, 2015, the Houston City Council designated it a historic landmark. This designation acknowledges its role in Houston's architectural and social history.
