First Evangelical Church, Houston, Texas

historic place

First Evangelical Church in Houston, Texas, began on July 1, 1851, as the First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, founded by Reverend Caspar Messon Braun. Its initial wooden sanctuary was on Texas Avenue. After a move in 1901, the church, by then known as First Evangelical Church, purchased its current Holman Street site in 1926. The present North Italian Romanesque style buildings, designed by architect Joseph W. Northrop, Jr., were completed in 1927. The congregation officially became First Evangelical Church on January 9, 1928. Designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2002 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, this site reflects a notable part of Houston's early religious and architectural development.
