Harris County Courthouse of 1910

historic place

The Harris County Courthouse of 1910 is a historic place in Houston, Texas. This site has served as the Courthouse Square for Harris County since April 1838. Earlier courthouses stood here in 1851, 1860, and 1884. The current structure, built between 1909 and 1910, is the fifth Harris County Courthouse on this location. Designed by Charles Erwin Barglebaugh of the Dallas architectural firm Lang and Witchell, the building features Classical Revival styling. It includes a domed roof, ornate central projections with Corinthian columns, and detailed ornamentation of terra cotta, limestone, and masonry. Construction utilized pink Texas granite and light brown St. Louis brick. During its construction, county offices operated from a nearby theater. In 1952, after a new criminal courthouse was built, this structure was remodeled for the Harris County Civil Courts. Beginning in 2009, the courthouse underwent restoration to its original 1910 appearance. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It represents a significant example of civic architecture in Harris County.
