Heights Boulevard Esplanade
historic place
The Heights Boulevard Esplanade in Houston, Texas, is a historic place located in Harris County. It was established in 1891 as a key feature of Houston Heights, a meticulously planned community. This development was undertaken by Oscar Martin Carter and the Omaha and South Texas Land Company. The esplanade itself is sixty feet wide and was designed to be the central spine for the new town. Its layout drew direct inspiration from Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, Massachusetts. Heights Boulevard was notable as the first street in the area to be paved, and the street railway system followed its course. Many early Victorian homes were constructed along its length, contributing to the area's distinct character. Today, the esplanade contains a walking path and continues to be a visual and social center for the neighborhood. It stands as a significant example of early planned community development in Texas.
