Heights Theater, Houston, Texas
historic place
The Heights Theater, located in Houston, Texas, began construction in 1928 and opened on May 14, 1929. Initially, its architecture reflected a Mission Revival style. In 1935, the theater underwent renovations, changing its facade to the Art Moderne style and increasing its seating capacity. For decades, the theater served as a neighborhood cinema. In 1969, a fire, later determined to be arson, significantly damaged the building. This event led to a period where the building sat vacant. In the late 1980s, the Heights Theater was renovated and reopened as an art space. Its uses evolved, including a period as an antique store. In 2015, the City of Houston designated the Heights Theater as a Protected Landmark. Following further renovations, it reopened in 2016 as a live music venue. The Heights Theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. This site represents a continuous presence in the Houston Heights commercial district, adapting its role for the community over many decades.
