House at 1237 Rutland Street

historic place

The House at 1237 Rutland Street in Houston, Harris County, is a historic place. This two-story, square frame house was built circa 1911. Its architectural style combines Queen Anne elements with Colonial Revival and Prairie school influences. The house features an attached double gallery, with the upper level now enclosed. Square wooden posts support its porch. The single front door includes a transom overhead, and the house rests on brick piers. This structure is considered a good example of the large, simple houses constructed in the Houston Heights area during the early 20th century. Houston Heights itself was once an independent municipality, designated as a Multiple Resource Area by the National Register Program. The House at 1237 Rutland Street was individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 1983. This site provides a tangible example of residential architecture from Houston Heights in the early 1900s.
