Houston Heights Woman's Club
historic place
The Houston Heights Woman's Club, a historic place in Harris County, began on January 15, 1900. Founded as the Houston Heights Literary Club, it focused on study and discussion, quickly expanding to support educational and charitable interests. In 1912, the club established its permanent home at 1846 Harvard Street, on land donated by Mrs. D.D. Cooley. Members raised funds for the clubhouse construction. The club helped establish a library at Houston Heights High School and formed the first Parent Teacher Association in the Heights. During both World War I and World War II, the clubhouse served as a Red Cross station for making surgical dressings. In World War II, volunteers produced over a million bandages, earning a citation from the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. The Texas Historical Commission erected a historical marker in 2011, recognizing the club's enduring community impact. This site highlights a century of women's civic engagement and community service in Houston.
