Houston Public Library

historic place

The Houston Public Library in Harris County traces its origins to the Houston Lyceum, established on May 27, 1854. Women's advocacy in the late 1800s, and a $50,000 donation from Andrew Carnegie in 1899, led to the first central public library. This facility opened on March 2, 1904. It was renamed Houston Public Library in 1921. A new central building, designed in Spanish Revival style, opened in 1926 and was later named for librarian Julia B. Ideson. A historical marker was erected in 2004. This location reflects Houston's commitment to public education and resources.
