James Bute Company Warehouse
historic place
The James Bute Company Warehouse is located at 711 William Street in Houston, Texas. This historic building was constructed between 1909 and 1910. It served as the primary warehouse for the James Bute Company, a paint business founded by James Bute. James Bute, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, immigrated to Houston in 1861. His company operated from 1867 until 1990, and at the time of its dissolution, it was believed to be the longest continually operating business in Houston's history. When completed, this building was considered the largest warehouse in Houston. Noted Houston architect Olle Lorehn designed the structure, which was built by Lucas and Smith. The James Bute Company Warehouse was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 7, 1994. After the company ceased operations in 1990, the property was repurposed into loft apartments in 1993. This site is significant for its connection to Houston's economic growth as a regional wholesale distribution center during the early 20th century.
