John M. Dorrance House, Houston, Texas

historic place

The John M. Dorrance House is located at 9 Courtlandt Place in Houston, Texas. This historic place was constructed in 1914. Designed by the firm Sanguinet & Staats, the stucco house exhibits influences of the Mediterranean style, sometimes referred to as the California Style. It is notable as the only house in Courtlandt Place to display this architectural approach. The house was the residence of John M. Dorrance, a significant figure in Houston's early 20th-century cotton industry. Dorrance arrived in Houston in 1891 and established Dorrance and Company. He also served as vice-president of the Houston Cotton Exchange and was involved in downtown real estate development. The Dorrance House reflects the architectural quality of Courtlandt Place, an exclusive residential subdivision established in 1906. The John M. Dorrance House remains an important link to Houston's cotton industry and the development of its early exclusive neighborhoods.
