Kennedy Bakery, Houston, Texas
historic place
The Kennedy Bakery, located at 813 Congress Street in Houston, Texas, is a historic place in Harris County. Irish native John Kennedy arrived in Houston in 1842. He was a baker who commissioned the construction of this two-story brick building around 1860 for a steam bakery. This structure is considered one of the oldest commercial buildings in Houston still on its original site. John Kennedy became a leading businessman, and the building remained in his family until 1970. The Texas Historical Commission erected a historical marker here in 1981. This site matters historically as a tangible link to Houston's early commercial development.
