Mackey, William, House
historic place
The William Mackey House, located at 313 East 37th Street in Houston's Independence Heights, was built around 1915. This one-story residence exemplifies the modified L-plan house, a popular architectural style of the early 20th century. It was the home of William Mackey, a key community leader. Mackey served as Camp Commander for the American Woodmen Camp 272 and Tent 272, a significant fraternal organization in Independence Heights. The house also hosted initial meetings for the Unity School of Christianity, one of many religious groups formed in the community during the early 1900s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, the William Mackey House is recognized for its architecture and its role in the ethnic heritage of Independence Heights. It offers a direct connection to the neighborhood's early development and community life.
