Maria Boswell Flake Home for Old Women

historic place

The Maria Boswell Flake Home for Old Women is a historic place in Houston, Harris County. Its origin stems from Maria Eliza Boswell Flake's 1915 will, which directed trustees to establish a home for elderly women with limited circumstances and no family. In 1922, a Prairie School house, constructed around 1913 at 1103 Berry Street, was purchased and converted into the Maria Boswell Flake Home. It operated in this capacity until 1971. This site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its social history as a Progressive Era elder care facility specifically for women.
