Oriental Textile Mill
historic place
The Oriental Textile Mill, a historic place in Houston, Texas, is located in the Heights neighborhood of Harris County. The mill building was constructed between 1893 and 1894 for A. R. Morey and Company, a mattress manufacturing business. It became known as the Oriental Textile Mill, producing textiles for pressing cotton seed oil. These textiles were reportedly woven from hair, primarily camel's hair. A notable feature of the complex is its four-story clock tower. The Oriental Textile Mill was among the first industrial complexes in Houston Heights and is the last of those early structures still standing. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and designated a City of Houston Landmark in 2007. This site represents a key part of the industrial history of Houston Heights.
