Sabine Street Bridge over Buffalo Bayou
historic place
The Sabine Street Bridge crosses Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Harris County, Texas. An earlier footbridge connected the Fourth and Sixth Wards near this location by 1891. The current Sabine Street Bridge was constructed in 1924. City bridge engineer W. W. Washburn designed this concrete tee beam structure. The bridge is 240 feet in length and spans 40 feet over the bayou. It is notable as the last remaining concrete bridge from the City of Houston's 1920 civic improvement program. The bridge continues to serve traffic over Buffalo Bayou today. It was nominated to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its engineering significance at the state level. This site is historically significant for its engineering and its contribution to Houston's early 20th-century infrastructure.
