San Jacinto Street Bridge over Buffalo Bayou

historic place

The San Jacinto Street Bridge crosses Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas, within Harris County. This structure was constructed in 1914. It replaced an earlier iron pivot bridge from 1883. The 1914 bridge was designed by E.E. Sands, a City of Houston engineer, and built by the William P. Carmichael Company of St. Louis. It features an open spandrel concrete arch, characteristic of the City Beautiful architectural style. This design facilitated river traffic with a large barrel arch ring. The bridge spans 325 feet and was rehabilitated in 1997, retaining its major design features. It connects downtown Houston with the historic Fifth Ward. The San Jacinto Street Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2007. This bridge is historically significant for its engineering and its role in connecting Houston's communities.
