Scanlan Building
historic place
The Scanlan Building, a historic place in Houston, Texas, was completed in 1909. This eleven-story structure stands in Harris County, on the site of the first official President's House of the Republic of Texas. The building was initially envisioned by Thomas Howe Scanlan, who served as a two-time mayor of Houston. After his death in 1906, his seven daughters constructed the building as a memorial to him. It was designed by Daniel H. Burnham of Chicago, a notable architect and city planner. The Scanlan Building is the only known office building in Texas designed by Burnham. Upon its completion, it was briefly the tallest building in Houston. The Scanlan Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 23, 1980, and designated a City of Houston Landmark in April 2000. This building represents a notable architectural achievement and a significant part of Houston's urban development.
