Sessums-James House
historic place
The Sessums-James House, a historic place in Houston, Texas, was constructed around 1894. This vernacular L-plan residence, with Queen Anne influences, offered insights into the economic growth of Houston's African American community in the late 19th century. John and Ann Sessums, who purchased the land in 1892, were the first owners. John Sessums was a skilled carpenter and a founding member of an early African-American church in Houston. The house was later owned by the William James family. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This historic structure at 3802 Spencer was later demolished for a shopping center. Its importance lies in its representation of late 19th-century African American construction and community development in Houston.
