Sheridan Apartments, Houston, Texas
historic place
The Sheridan Apartments, located in Houston, Texas, in Harris County, is a historic place. This three-story apartment building was constructed in 1922. It was built and owned by Robert C. Duff, a prominent Texas railroad man and banker. The apartments were designed to help ease a housing shortage in Houston at that time. The building features bracketed eaves and a tile roof. Its architectural styling shows influences of the Arts and Crafts and Prairie School periods, with some Italianate references. The Sheridan Apartments are notable as one of Houston's few remaining "flats" from the 1920s and 1930s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1984. The City of Houston also designated it as a landmark in 1998. The historical marker for the Sheridan Apartments was erected in 1984 by the Texas Historical Commission. The building is important because it has undergone no significant alterations since its erection. It represents an early example of multi-unit apartment buildings in Houston.
