The Hogg Building in Houston
historic place
The Hogg Building, a historic place in Harris County, Houston, was constructed in 1921. This commercial structure was developed by Will C. Hogg, a prominent Houston business and civic leader. The Art Deco building was designed by the engineering firm of Barglebaugh and Whitson. Its exterior is notably dominated by industrial windows, covering over 65% of its facade. A distinctive rooftop penthouse, reflecting Mediterranean influences, served as offices for the Hogg family businesses and as Will C. Hogg's private residence. Early tenants included the Armor Auto Company and the Great Southern Life Insurance Company. The Hogg Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1980. The historical marker for this site was erected in 1981 by the Texas Historical Commission. The building stands as an important example of early 20th-century commercial architecture in Houston and highlights Will C. Hogg's contributions to the city.
