U.S. Customhouse, Houston, Texas

historic place

The U.S. Customhouse in Houston, Harris County, Texas, is a historic place located at 701 San Jacinto Street. Construction of this building took place between 1907 and 1911. Architect James Knox Taylor designed it in the Second Renaissance Revival style. The building initially served as a post office, a federal district court, and other federal offices. A grand opening celebration on December 1, 1911, welcomed thousands of Houstonians. An addition was completed in 1931 to accommodate increasing federal needs. The courthouse operated here until 1962, and the post office also vacated a portion of its space that year. Subsequently, the building was converted for use as the custom house. The U.S. Customhouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 28, 1974. This building marks a period of federal expansion and architectural development in early 20th-century Houston.
