Union Station, Houston, Texas
historic place
Union Station in Houston, Harris County, is a significant historic place. It officially opened on March 2, 1911, serving as Houston's main inter-city passenger terminal. Designed by architects Warren and Wetmore, the firm also responsible for New York's Grand Central Terminal, the building features a Classical Revival style. Its exterior incorporates granite, limestone, and terracotta, with extensive marble inside. For decades, Union Station was a central hub for rail transportation in the Southern United States. Passenger train service at Union Station ceased in 1974, with the last regularly-scheduled train departing on July 31, 1974. Today, Union Station has been preserved and renovated, serving as the main lobby for Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 10, 1977, and designated a Texas State Antiquities Landmark on May 28, 1981. Union Station stands as a reminder of Houston's history as a prominent railroad center.
