Union Transfer and Storage Building

historic place

The Union Transfer and Storage Building is located in Houston, Harris County, Texas. Construction of this historic place occurred in two phases. The northern half was built in 1917, using heavy timber post and beam with masonry load-bearing walls. The southern half, added in 1920, utilized structural reinforced concrete frame and slab with masonry infill. This demonstrates a shift in early twentieth-century construction technology. The Union Transfer and Storage business operated from this site between 1923 and 1954. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 16, 2001. It was later adapted for use as an office and art gallery complex in 1999. This structure highlights central Houston's expanding need for warehouse facilities in the early 20th century.
