Ward House

historic place

The Ward House, located at 1902 Sunset Boulevard in Houston, is a historic two-story brick residence. Constructed in 1934 by the Benson-Hall Company, it exhibits a Colonial Revival architectural style. The house was first home to Hortense Sparks Ward and her family. Hortense Sparks Ward was a significant figure in Texas history, recognized as the first female lawyer in the state and the first woman to register to vote in Harris County. She was also a leader in the suffragette movement and served as a Justice on a special, all-female Supreme Court of Texas in 1925. Later, the notable philanthropist M.D. Anderson resided here during the final years of his life. The Ward House was designated a City of Houston Historic Landmark in October 2014. This location highlights significant contributions to Houston's legal, social, and philanthropic history.
