Josey Boy Scout Lodge and Keeper's Cabin

historic place

The Josey Boy Scout Lodge and Keeper's Cabin are located in Huntsville, Walker County, Texas. These log structures represent Depression-era rustic park architecture. Oilman Robert A. Josey, a Huntsville native, provided funding for the lodge's construction in 1933. Additional support came from the federal government's Civil Works Administration, known as the CWA. Gibbs Brothers and Company donated the logs and rock used in the buildings. The main lodge was dedicated in 1934, and the Keeper's Cabin followed in 1935. The lodge features native pine logs, five rooms, and three fireplaces with petrified stone hearths and mantles. The Josey Boy Scout Lodge and Keeper's Cabin continue to serve the Boy Scout programs in the Huntsville area. The site was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2010. These buildings are significant for their association with local scouting activities and as an example of rustic architectural design.
