The Mrs. Sam Houston House is a historic place located in Independence, Washington County, Texas. This Greek Revival style residence, sometimes known as the Root house, was constructed in the 1830s. During her time in Independence, she sent her older children to Baylor University. A historical marker was erected in 1965, commemorating her residency. The house was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The Mrs. Sam Houston House is significant for its direct association with Margaret Lea Houston.
