Aber and Haberle Houses, Jacksonville, Texas

historic place

In Jacksonville, Texas, stand the Aber and Haberle Houses, located at 823 and 833 South Bolton Street in Cherokee County. These historic homes are connected to the Aber and Haberle families. Edgar A. Aber, born in 1852, and Susan Katherine Haberle, born in 1856, married in 1874. The Aber family moved to Jacksonville around 1890. The Aber home, built of rugged brick, stands next to the Fred Haberle homestead, which features similar construction. Both houses were built simultaneously, likely shortly after 1890. Edgar Aber established a brickyard in Jacksonville in 1890. He also manufactured fruit boxes, a business he later sold to his brother-in-law, Fred Haberle. The Haberle family operated this business until 1979. The Aber and Haberle Houses were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 21, 1984. They reflect an important period of Jacksonville's early industrial and residential development.
