State Highway 27 Bridge at the South Llano River
historic place
Welcome to the State Highway 27 Bridge at the South Llano River in Junction, Kimble County, Texas. This historic structure was constructed between 1936 and 1937. It holds significance in engineering, embodying the design characteristics of a Texas Highway Department truss bridge. The bridge also utilized technically complex and innovative construction methods. The need for a river crossing at this location dates back to Junction's establishment in 1876. An earlier bridge, built in 1916, served the Old Spanish Trail highway. The current bridge replaced that older structure. During its construction, Joe R. Andrews was killed. The State Highway 27 Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Today, it overlooks Lake Junction, formed by a dam in 1965. A historical marker, erected in 2008 by the Texas Historical Commission, further details the South Llano Crossing. This bridge stands as a significant example of mid-20th century state highway engineering.
