Bunton Branch Bridge
historic place
The Bunton Branch Bridge is a historic place in Kyle, Hays County, Texas. It was constructed in 1915 by J.N. George & Sons Construction Company. This concrete arch bridge was part of the first federal aid highway projects in Texas. It improved rural mail delivery on the Austin-San Antonio road. The 42-foot long structure features a single closed-spandrel arch. This bridge holds the distinction of being the oldest concrete bridge in Hays County. It is also the only known reinforced concrete arch bridge from its original project. The Austin-San Antonio Road, later designated State Highway 2, was once a heavily traveled route. In the 1930s, the state highway department changed the alignment, bypassing this section of the old post road. Today, the Bunton Branch Bridge remains a tangible link to that historic roadway. A historical marker was erected here in 2012.
