Lockhart Vocational High School
historic place
Lockhart Vocational High School, in Caldwell County, was built in 1923 for African American students. Local tradition states that materials from the former Ross Institute were salvaged for its construction. The Rosenwald Foundation of Chicago provided design and partial funding, with the school district and local African American citizens supplying the remaining funds. R.A. Atkinson was the first principal. The school received state accreditation in 1926. In 1946, it was renamed G.W. Carver High School. It closed in 1964 due to integration. The building later housed a Head Start program. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2008. This site is important for understanding African American education in Lockhart.
