Withers, M. A., House

historic place

The M. A. Withers House, a historic place in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas, was constructed around 1895. Carpenter W. W. Randle built the original rectangular structure. Approximately one year later, a rear addition was built, forming an L-shaped plan. The house exhibits a Late Victorian style with Italianate proportions. It was the home of prominent cattleman Mark A. Withers, who occupied it from 1895 until his death in 1937. Withers was a key figure in the post-Civil War Texas cattle industry. He participated in 27 longhorn cattle trail drives between 1868 and 1893, herding millions of cattle and horses. The M. A. Withers House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 27, 1976. It is significant for its architecture and its association with the frontier ranching and trail-driving eras that shaped Texas history.
