Fort Worth and Denver South Plains Railway Depot

historic place

The Fort Worth and Denver South Plains Railway Depot, located in Lubbock, Texas, is a historic place. This Spanish Renaissance Revival passenger and freight depot was constructed in 1928 for $45,889. Wyatt C. Hedrick of Fort Worth served as the architect, and F. A. Mote of Dallas was the builder. The completion of the Fort Worth and Denver South Plains Railway to Lubbock in 1928 provided the city with a second major rail connection. At that time, Lubbock had a population of approximately 20,000 people, and this railway expanded its trade area. The depot was abandoned in 1953. It was later adapted for restaurant use in 1976. In August 1979, the City of Lubbock, Urban Design and Historic Preservation Commission declared it the first Lubbock Historic Landmark. The depot was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This structure represents a significant period of transportation development in Lubbock.
