Great Plains Life Insurance Company Building
historic place
The Great Plains Life Insurance Company Building is located in Lubbock, Texas. This twenty-story high-rise began construction in 1953 and was completed in 1955. Upon its completion, it became the tallest building in Lubbock, standing 274 feet high. The building was originally named for the Great Plains Life Insurance Company, its first occupant. Over time, it became known by other names, including the NTS Building and later the Metro Tower. In 1970, the structure suffered heavy damage from the Lubbock tornado. It sat vacant for several years following the tornado, but was extensively renovated and reopened in 1975. Additional renovations took place in 2019. In 2021, the Great Plains Life Insurance Company Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This building stands as a significant example of Lubbock's mid-20th-century architectural development and its ability to recover from natural disaster.
