Lubbock High School

historic place

Lubbock High School, a historic place in Lubbock County, was established in 1891, making it the county's first high school. This founding predates the incorporation of Lubbock, Texas, by eighteen years. By the 1920s, Lubbock's growing population required a new high school building. Designed by the firm Peters, Strange and Bradshaw, the current structure was completed in 1931. Its construction proceeded despite the early economic hardships of the Great Depression. The school displays a richly ornamented, North Italian Romanesque architectural style. Notable features include decorative brickwork, terra cotta ornamentation, and a campanile, or bell tower. Lubbock High School was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1984. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The building stands as a significant example of institutional architecture and a local landmark in Texas.
