Texas Technological College Dairy Barn

historic place

The Texas Technological College Dairy Barn, in Lubbock, Texas, was constructed between 1926 and 1927. Fort Worth architect W.C. Hedrick designed the barn, with assistance from Agricultural Dean A.H. Leidigh and Professor W.L. Stangel. For 40 years, this facility served as a teaching site. Students housed their own cows here until 1935. Milk products were first marketed through the Student Dairy Association. After 1927, the Dairy Manufactures Department supplied milk and ice cream to college cafeterias and the Lubbock community. A fire in January 1930 caused damage, but the barn was repaired. Dairy operations moved in 1964, and the barn was abandoned. From 1990 to 1992, a student fundraising effort led to its preservation. The dairy barn was recognized by the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. It represents the college's early agricultural education and heritage.
