The Carlock Building in Lubbock, Texas
historic place
The Carlock Building, located at 1001-1013 13th Street in Lubbock, Texas, is an Art Deco style office building. It was constructed in 1930 as the New Cotton Exchange Building. J.B. Davies and Company of Fort Worth designed the structure for original owners J.D. Doughty and J.B. Kerby. The building reflected the importance of cotton to the South Plains region's economy. Cotton merchandising firms, led by Charles Paul Carlock and Watson Carlock, have continuously occupied the building since 1930. A historical marker was erected in 1983 by the Lubbock Texas Urban Design and Historic Preservation Commission. The Carlock Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 28, 2004. It stands as a significant example of Lubbock's commercial history and its ties to the cotton industry.
