The In Town Inn of Lubbock, Texas
historic place
The In Town Inn, located in Lubbock, Texas, began its history as the Jim Kimmel Center. Conceived by the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce in 1961, this luxurious motor inn opened its doors in 1964. Designed by Schmidt & Stuart Architects, it provided modern amenities for business travelers, including a swimming pool, dining, and meeting facilities. The inn's prominence shifted in the 1970s, impacted by a local tornado and the growth of suburban developments. By the 1990s, it transitioned into the Jim Kimmel Center rehab facility. Recognizing its architectural and historical value, the In Town Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. It stands as a notable example of a mid-century motor inn in downtown Lubbock. In 2023, the property was acquired for redevelopment. It reopened in June 2026 as the Inn Town Lofts, providing affordable housing. This site demonstrates the evolution of downtown Lubbock's urban landscape.
