The Kress Building, Lubbock, Texas

historic place

The Kress Building, a historic place in Lubbock, Texas, stands at 1109 Broadway. It was constructed in 1932, representing a bold commercial investment during the Great Depression. Edward F. Sibbert, the chief architect for S.H. Kress & Company, designed this structure. The building features a Mission Revival architectural style, with notable decorative terra cotta elements and subtle Art Moderne influences. It originally opened as an S.H. Kress & Co. five-and-dime store, serving the community until 1975. Following its time as a Kress store, the building housed Goodwill Industries and later, Burklee Hill Vineyards. The Kress Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Its distinctive architecture and long history as a downtown commercial hub highlight its importance to Lubbock's development.
