Carson County Square House Museum

historic place

The Carson County Square House Museum in Panhandle, Texas, features a historic structure. The original square house was built in the mid-1880s, specifically 1887. The Niedringhaus brothers of St. Louis constructed it on their "N Bar N" Ranch, using lumber hauled by ox-cart from Dodge City. A railroad official occupied the cottage in 1887 during the extension of the Southern Kansas Railway to Panhandle City. The house later served as home to settlers like pioneer banker James Christopher Paul and Sheriff Oscar L. Thorp. This structure, considered the oldest house in Panhandle, was purchased in 1965 and restored. The Carson County Museum opened in 1967. In 1966, it was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The museum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This site preserves an early Carson County residence and its role in the region's history.
