Daniels Farm House, Rio Grande Village

historic place

The Daniels Farm House is a historic place located in Rio Grande Village, within Big Bend National Park in Brewster County, Texas. The structure was originally built in 1918 by John O. Wedlin as a storage shed for his farm equipment. Wedlin established one of the area's first pump-powered irrigation systems, growing wheat on land he purchased from Jesus Estrada. In 1926, Wedlin sold the farm to Joe M. Graham. Later, in 1937, John R. Daniels and Mary Coe Daniels acquired a portion of the property. The Daniels family converted the former storage shed into their residence and added a room to operate a small store for the local community. They also cultivated cotton on about 100 acres. This two-room adobe building, measuring approximately 44 by 15 feet, features a traditional roof style of cane latillas over aspen log vigas. The Daniels Farm House represents one of the last remaining examples of small-scale, irrigated pioneer farming in West Texas. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 20, 1989. The site preserves a record of early 20th-century agricultural practices in the Rio Grande floodplain.
