Edwards County Courthouse and Jail
historic place
The Edwards County Courthouse and Jail in Rocksprings, Texas, is a historic place. The courthouse, a late Victorian structure of rusticated limestone, was erected in 1891. Contractors Davey and Schott built it using local limestone after Rocksprings became the permanent county seat that year. The courthouse endured significant events. In 1897, fire left only its stone walls standing, and it was later restored. A 1927 tornado tore off the roof, leading to another restoration. The Edwards County Jail, built in 1895, stands adjacent. It was constructed from the same coursed limestone and shares a similar design. The Edwards County Courthouse was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1973. This site has continuously served as the center of government for Edwards County.
