Aztec Theater, San Antonio, Texas

historic place

The Aztec Theater, a historic place in Bexar County, San Antonio, opened on June 4, 1926. Designed by Meyer and Holler, it was an exotic-themed motion picture palace. Its Mesoamerican architectural style features vibrantly colored columns, sculptures, and murals. A two-ton chandelier was installed in the lobby in 1929. Originally a silent movie house, the theater closed in 1989. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 1992, saving it from demolition. Following restoration, the Aztec Theater reopened in 2009 as a live music venue. This landmark remains a notable example of 1920s themed theater architecture in Texas.
