Ben Milam Statue
historic place
In San Antonio, Texas, stands a bronze statue honoring Benjamin Rush Milam. This historic place is located in Bexar County, within Milam Park. The statue was erected in 1938, as part of the Texas Centennial celebration. San Antonio-born artist Bonnie MacLeary sculpted the thirteen-foot-tall bronze figure, which rests on a sixteen-foot pink Texas granite base. The statue commemorates Ben Milam, a key figure in the Texas Revolution. Born in Kentucky in 1788, Milam was a soldier and colonizer. In December 1835, during the Siege of Bexar, he rallied Texan volunteers with the cry, "Who will follow Old Ben Milam into San Antonio?" He led the attack and was killed on December 7, 1835, by a Mexican sharpshooter. His remains were later reinterred at the base of this statue. This statue marks a significant site in Texas history.
