Bexar County Courthouse

historic place

Welcome to the Bexar County Courthouse in San Antonio, Texas. This historic place occupies the south side of Main Plaza, an area established by Canary Islanders in 1731. This plaza has long been the administrative and judicial heart of Bexar County. Completed in 1896, this is the fourth building to house the county government since Texas joined the United States. Its cornerstone was laid in 1892. Architect James Riely Gordon designed the courthouse in the Romanesque style. Constructed with native Texas granite and red sandstone, the building features distinctive towers with green and red tiles, along with columns, arches, and detailed carvings. Additions were made in 1914 and 1926, using similar materials. Later expansions in the 1960s and 70s altered the original design, though recent restorations have aimed to bring back its earlier grandeur. The Bexar County Courthouse stands as a prominent example of late 19th-century public architecture in Texas.
