Brooke Army Medical Center
historic place
Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, holds a significant place in military medical history. Its beginnings trace to a temporary 12-bed hospital established in 1879. A permanent brick hospital was built in 1886. By 1908, an 84-bed Station Hospital was constructed on Fort Sam Houston. A new 418-bed Station Hospital began construction in July 1936, opening by November 1938. In 1942, the hospital was renamed Brooke General Hospital, honoring Brigadier General Roger Brooke, a former commanding officer. It became Brooke Army Medical Center in 1946. The site gained recognition as a historic place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 as part of the Fort Sam Houston Historic District. Later, in 2001, it was listed on its own merits. Brooke Army Medical Center illustrates the development of military healthcare in the United States.
