Central Trust Company Building

historic place

The Central Trust Company Building, located in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, is a significant historic place. Construction on this twelve-story structure began in 1918, and it officially opened on December 22, 1919. At the time, it stood as the tallest and most modern bank tower in San Antonio. The Central Trust Bank initially occupied the ground and mezzanine levels, while many of San Antonio's businessmen and professionals maintained offices on the upper floors. The building was designed by the Fort Worth architectural firm Sanguinet and Staats, in association with local architects Atlee B. Ayers and Charles T. Boelhauwe. Its Beaux Arts style represented an uncommon architectural departure for the city. The Central Trust Bank closed in September 1931. In 1932, the South Texas Bank and Trust Company moved into the building, which was then known as the South Texas Bank Building during the 1930s and 1940s. The Central Trust Company Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 11, 1982. It remains an important architectural landmark in San Antonio.
