City of San Antonio Municipal Auditorium
historic place
The City of San Antonio Municipal Auditorium, located in Bexar County, Texas, was built in 1926. It was dedicated as a memorial to American soldiers who died in World War I. Designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by Atlee B. Ayres and his associates, the building featured a limestone exterior with red tiled roofs and domed towers. For decades, this auditorium was a central venue for San Antonio, hosting symphony concerts, operas, graduations, and political rallies. A notable event in August 1939 involved civil unrest during a Communist Party meeting. In January 1979, a fire severely damaged the interior. Despite this, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in September 1981. Voters approved restoration, and the renovated building reopened in 1985. Today, portions of its historic facade are preserved within the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, which opened in 2014, continuing its cultural significance.
